Alberta's iGaming Market Hits One Month: 28 Sites, Targets Ahead of Schedule
⏳ 3 min read

One month after Alberta opened Canada's second regulated online gambling market on 13 July 2026, the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) says the launch has exceeded internal expectations — and that the province's headline channelisation target is already within striking distance. The market opened with 22 live platforms from a registered pool of 50 operators; by mid-August that active count had climbed to 27 licensed sites, with more approvals pending.

AiGC CEO Dan Keene told reporters the volume of operator sign-ups had "exceeded" expectations, while geolocation firm GeoComply reported 3.2 million location checks in the market's first week, covering roughly 64% of launch-day operators — meaning total market activity was higher still. More than 100,000 Albertans registered on regulated platforms within the opening seven days, with peak traffic tied to the FIFA World Cup Spain vs. Argentina final.

Launch Snapshot

Alberta's market is governed by the iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48) and overseen by two bodies: the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) handles operator registration and compliance, while the newly created AiGC manages commercial relationships and market development. Major brands live on day one included FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365, BetRivers, and Fanatics, alongside the government-run PlayAlberta platform.

In the weeks since launch, the roster has expanded. New registrations confirmed for Videoslots, Mr Vegas, and GGPoker are working through approval pipelines, with GGPoker set to become the province's first dedicated poker brand once its operating agreement is finalised.

  • 50 operators registered by AGLC at launch
  • 22 live on day one, 27 active by mid-August
  • 3.2 million geolocation checks in week one (GeoComply)
  • 100,000+ new player registrations in the first seven days
  • 99.5% geolocation pass rate during peak World Cup traffic

Channelisation: Ahead of Target

The central policy test for Alberta's market is channelisation — pulling bettors away from offshore grey-market sites onto regulated platforms. Before the market opened, the province estimated that approximately 70% of Alberta's online gambling spend flowed to unregulated operators. The AiGC's official goal is to capture 70% channelisation after year one and 75% by the end of year two.

Speaking on SBC's iGaming Daily podcast in late July, Dan Keene said the province already expects to "overachieve" on those numbers, describing the targets as potentially too conservative. Early uptake data and operator demand both point to a faster-than-modelled migration from grey sites, mirroring Ontario's post-2022 trajectory where regulated share surged from roughly 32% to 87% within two years of its April 2022 market opening.

Revenue Projections

Government projections put first-year iGaming tax revenue at C$76 million, drawn from a 20% levy on gross gaming revenue (GGR) paid by each licensed private operator. Independent analysts are considerably more bullish: JMP Securities analyst Jordan Bender projected the province could generate over C$700 million in annual GGR at steady state — roughly C$500 million from online casino and C$200 million from sports betting. H2 Gambling Capital sits between the two, forecasting C$1.2 billion in GGR for the current financial year and C$1.64 billion by FY2028.

The provincial government has separately confirmed that 1% of all operator GGR is ringfenced for social responsibility initiatives, funding problem gambling services and public awareness campaigns.

Responsible Gambling Funding

Alongside the commercial milestone, Alberta's Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction published a request for expressions of interest on 13 August 2026 for new gambling addiction programs to be funded by iGaming revenues. The province is seeking proposals for services beyond what Recovery Alberta's existing crisis hotline already provides, including a 21-day bed-based residential treatment option. The funding mechanism — the 1% social responsibility levy on operator GGR — means the treatment pipeline scales automatically with market size.

Critics had raised concerns before the July launch that Alberta's legislation did not go far enough on harm-reduction safeguards. The government's move to actively tender addiction services using iGaming revenues represents a partial response to those objections, though advocacy groups have not yet publicly assessed whether the proposed programs are sufficient.

Our goal in the first two years is to get to 75% channelisation — we think we can overachieve on that number.
