UK Deposit Limit Deadline: What Every Operator Must Do by 30 September
⏳ 3 min read

Every licensed remote gambling operator in the UK faces a hard compliance deadline of 30 September 2026 to implement the second phase of the Gambling Commission's revised deposit-limit rules. The reforms, rooted in changes to the Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards (RTS), redefine what a "deposit limit" legally means — and operators that are not fully compliant by today face enforcement exposure.

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) first introduced phase one of the updated RTS in October 2025, before extending the phase-two deadline from 30 June 2026 to 30 September 2026 following stakeholder feedback about the scale of technical work required. With that extension now expired, the rules land on every casino, sportsbook, bingo, and poker site holding a British remote operating licence — no carve-outs, no further grace.

What the Rules Require

The UKGC's implementation extension notice sets out three non-negotiable obligations for all licensed remote operators from 30 September 2026:

  • Offer gross deposit limits to all customers — and reinstate them if they were previously removed from the product
  • Label gross deposit limits exclusively as "deposit limits"; no other type of financial limit may carry that term
  • Display deposit limits with at least equal prominence to any other type of financial limit shown to the customer

Additionally, from the 30 September deadline, gross deposit limits must operate on fixed time frames only — rolling periods are no longer permitted for this limit type. Operators must offer periods covering at a minimum 24 hours, 7 days, and one month.

Gross vs Net: The Key Distinction

The regulatory pivot is conceptual as much as technical. A gross deposit limit caps the total amount a player puts into their account over a given period — withdrawals do not offset it. Under old practice, some operators used net deposit calculations where winnings withdrawn within the same period would reduce the apparent amount "deposited," allowing higher actual cash inflows before the limit triggered.

Limit Type Calculation Basis Permitted as "Deposit Limit" from 30 Sept Time Frame
Gross deposit limit Total deposits in period — no deductions Yes — only this type Fixed only (24h / 7d / 1 month)
Net deposit limit Deposits minus withdrawals No — cannot be called a deposit limit Any, but not as "deposit limit"
Loss limit Net losses in period No — separate label required Any
Spend / wagering limit Total bets placed No — separate label required Any

Operators that previously offered loss limits or net-deposit limits under the "deposit limit" label must relabel those products and ensure gross limits take primacy in every customer-facing interface.

Operator Compliance Checklist

Industry analysis from TechRound and SBC News outlines the technical and operational scope involved:

  • Database and account logic: limit calculations must switch to gross, with no deduction for withdrawals within the period
  • UI copy: all "deposit limit" labels across responsible gambling menus, registration flows, and help centres must reflect the new definition
  • Prominence checks: audits of every page that surfaces financial limits to confirm gross deposit limits appear at least as prominently as alternatives
  • New-player journeys: players must set a deposit limit before making their first deposit; OLBG reports the default ceiling is typically £500 per month without a financial affordability check
  • Audit trails: compliance reporting procedures must capture the new limit type separately from other financial controls
  • Multi-brand operators: each brand's platform requires independent implementation, multiplying engineering effort for large groups running legacy stacks

The Commission confirmed it granted the three-month extension from June to September specifically because operators flagged the complexity of these back-end changes — particularly for businesses running multiple brands on legacy platforms.

What Changes for Players

For bettors, the practical effect is greater clarity and consistency. A player setting a £200 weekly deposit limit will hit that ceiling once they have paid in £200 that calendar week — regardless of how much they have withdrawn. Previously, a player who deposited £200 and withdrew £100 might have found their effective limit reset by half under a net calculation.

New customers face an additional step at registration: they must actively choose a deposit limit before placing a first bet. Existing customers whose operators had previously removed gross deposit limit options will see those controls reappear in their responsible gambling dashboards. Players aged 18 to 24 — and others flagged as financially vulnerable — remain subject to enhanced affordability checks under the parallel RTS 12 financial limits framework if monthly deposits exceed defined thresholds.
