Alberta iGaming Launches With 50 Operators, Targets C$1.64B Market
⏱ 3 min read

Alberta's regulated iGaming market went live on 13 July 2026, making the province Canada's second — and only the second anywhere in the country — to open its online gambling sector to private competition. 22 operator sites were live on day one, drawn from a registered field of 50 operators who collectively paid a $200,000 CAD entry fee apiece to participate.

The market's architects project annual gross gaming revenue of over $700 million CAD — split roughly $500 million from online casinos and $200 million from sports betting — with H2 Gambling Capital forecasting the market could reach C$1.64 billion by fiscal year 2028 as the regulated share of player spending grows from its current 32% to a targeted 87%.

The Launch

At midnight on 13 July 2026, Alberta's competitive iGaming market opened under the authority of the iGaming Alberta Act (Bill 48, enacted spring 2025). The legislation created a dual-regulator architecture: Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) handles registration and compliance, while the newly formed Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) manages commercial agreements, financial reporting, and anti-money laundering obligations.

Operators that completed AGLC registration but had not yet finalised their commercial deal with AiGC by launch day were given until 13 October 2026 to go live or exit the market. The government-owned Play Alberta platform continues to operate alongside private entrants rather than being wound down.

Alberta Minister Dale Nally stated that "standing still was not the responsible choice," pointing to the hundreds of millions in annual player spending flowing to unregulated offshore sites as the core justification for opening the market.

Regulatory Structure

The framework mirrors Ontario's post-2022 model with several Alberta-specific additions:

  • A 20% net revenue tax applies to all licensed operators.
  • 2% of net revenue is directed to First Nations communities.
  • 1% flows to responsible gambling programmes.
  • Operators must meet minimum SOC 2 Type 1 security attestation before going live.
  • Mandatory integration with AGLC's centralised self-exclusion system is required from day one; wagers placed after a self-exclusion registration are voided and refunded.
  • RG Check accreditation, self-assessment tools, and deposit and time limits are compulsory for all licensees.

Operators and Brands

The 22 day-one live sites included the dominant U.S.-origin sportsbook brands alongside several international and Canadian operators. Notable day-one entrants included FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, bet365, BetRivers, theScore Bet, DAZN Bet, BetVictor, TonyBet, and Golden Nugget Online Casino. Caesars Entertainment, PointsBet, Betway, and BET99 completed registration but did not go live on day one.

Two brands conspicuously absent from the Alberta launch were Fanatics Sportsbook and Hard Rock Bet — the latter of which launched in Ontario on 22 July 2026, marking Hard Rock Digital's first market outside the United States.

Day-one charitable pledges signalled competitive intent: DraftKings committed $150,000 CAD and FanDuel committed $80,000 CAD to Alberta community organisations.

Alberta vs. Ontario

Ontario launched Canada's first competitive iGaming market in April 2022 and generated more than $4.4 billion CAD in gross gaming revenue for the year ended 31 May 2026 — a benchmark Alberta is aiming to scale toward. Alberta's market is structurally similar but smaller: the province has roughly 4.4 million residents versus Ontario's 15 million.

Metric Alberta (Launch, July 2026) Ontario (Year 4, FY2026)

What It Means for Bettors

Alberta residents who have been using grey-market offshore platforms can now switch to licensed alternatives without sacrificing product breadth: day-one operators collectively offered thousands of casino titles alongside full sportsbooks. Regulated accounts come with mandatory consumer protections — deposit limits, session timers, instant self-exclusion — that offshore sites do not enforce.

The regulatory mandate to reach 87% channelization will likely translate into aggressive welcome offers as new entrants compete for the estimated 68% of Alberta's online gambling spend still going to unlicensed sites at launch. Players should verify operator registration with the AGLC before depositing; the authorised operator list is published on Alberta.ca.
