Alberta's regulated iGaming market went live on July 13, 2026, making the province Canada's second open, competitive online gambling jurisdiction after Ontario. On opening day, 22 operator platforms went live simultaneously, with 50 operators having completed full registration with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis (AGLC) — alongside 58 critical gaming systems providers and 14 platform providers.
The scale of the launch reflects years of regulatory groundwork. Alberta's government estimates that roughly 70% of the province's online gambling was previously flowing to unregulated offshore operators. The new framework, built around the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), aims to recapture 75% of that market within two years — and independent analyst projections put peak annual gross gaming revenue at more than C$700 million.

The Launch
Alberta's iGaming market officially opened at midnight on July 13, 2026, following a registration window that began on January 13, 2026 when the AGLC first accepted operator applications. The market operates under the iGaming Alberta Act, which established the legal foundation for private-operator licensing separate from the government-run PlayAlberta platform.
Unlike most Canadian provinces, which maintain a government monopoly on online gambling, Alberta adopted a dual-track model: PlayAlberta continues to operate while licensed private brands compete directly alongside it. The framework mirrors the structure Ontario launched in April 2022, though Alberta's day-one operator count exceeded Ontario's opening roster. Grey-market operators already active in the province have been given until October 13, 2026 to transition into the regulated framework or exit the market.
Regulatory Structure
Two bodies govern the market. The AGLC handles licensing, enforcement, and standards compliance — including the Standards and Requirements for Internet Gaming (SRIG), published in January and February 2026. The AiGC, a Crown corporation at arm's length from government, manages commercial relationships and centralized technical infrastructure.
Operators pay a one-time C$50,000 application fee, an annual C$150,000 registration fee, and an initial C$10,000 deposit toward background-check costs. Revenue sharing gives the province 20% of net iGaming revenue, with operators retaining 80%. A further 3% of gross gaming revenue (GGR) is allocated to First Nations initiatives and social responsibility programs before the operator share is calculated.
Alberta iGaming Operators on Day One
The following major brands were confirmed live at launch among the 50 registered operators:
- FanDuel, DraftKings (including its Golden Nugget Online Gaming casino product), BetMGM, bet365
- BetRivers, PointsBet Canada, Caesars (launching three separate brands: Caesars Sportsbook, Caesars Palace Online, and Horseshoe Online Casino)
- TonyBet, BET99, Betway, 888, theScore Bet, Hollywood Casino, Bally's, Pure Casino Entertainment, and River Cree iGaming
Community investment accompanied the commercial push: DraftKings pledged C$150,000 to Food Banks Alberta at launch, while FanDuel committed C$80,000 in local donations.
Revenue and Projections
The Alberta government's internal projections put AiGC revenue at C$75 million for 2026–27, rising to C$109 million by 2028–29. The province committed C$105 million in capital investment to build out iGaming infrastructure in the current fiscal year.
Independent analysts are considerably more bullish. Citizens JMP Securities analyst Jordan Bender estimated the market could generate more than C$700 million in annual GGR at scale — approximately C$500 million from online casino and C$200 million from sports betting. H2 Gambling Capital projects C$1.7 billion in GGR by year two, contingent on rapid channelization away from grey-market sites.

What It Means for Bettors
Alberta residents now have access to a competitive market with consumer protections absent from offshore sites. The SRIG mandates the following on every licensed platform:
- A centralized self-exclusion system covering both land-based casinos and regulated iGaming platforms simultaneously
- Mandatory deposit limits, time-on-device limits, and self-assessment tools
- RG Check accreditation required before any operator can accept players
- Advertising restrictions banning athletes and celebrities in content that could target minors, effective January 2026 nationally
For bettors currently using grey-market platforms, the practical consequence of the October 13, 2026 compliance deadline is straightforward: operators that don't register will likely restrict or shut down Alberta accounts. The AiGC's player directory at abigaming.ca lists all sites where deposits and play are fully legal and protected.
