On 13 July 2026, Alberta became only the second Canadian province to open a competitive, multi-operator iGaming market, ending the government-run Play Alberta monopoly. 22 platforms went live at midnight under dual oversight from the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) and the newly created Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC), with 50 operators in total having completed registration.
The province projects C$76 million in government revenue during the first partial fiscal year, while H2 Gambling Capital estimates Alberta's regulated GGR will reach C$1.2 billion in FY2026-27 and climb to C$1.64 billion by FY28 — a two-year aggregate of nearly C$2.8 billion. The central policy target: shift the regulated market share from approximately 30% today to 87% within two years, drawing players away from the offshore grey market that previously dominated the province.

How the Alberta iGaming Market Works
Alberta's framework uses a dual-body structure modelled on Ontario's 2022 rollout. The AGLC handles licensing and compliance, while the AiGC manages commercial agreements between the province and each operator. Both registrations are mandatory before any platform can go live.
The enabling law is Bill 48 (iGaming Alberta Act), passed in spring 2025 under Minister Dale Nally of Service Alberta. It amended the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act and its Regulations (updated January 2026). The AGLC's Internet Gaming Go-Live Compliance Guide took effect 17 March 2026, mandating technical standards, age verification, responsible gambling tools, and SOC 2 compliance for technology suppliers.
Operators pay a one-time application fee of C$50,000 and an annual registration fee of C$150,000 per brand. Revenue is split 80% to operators and 20% to the provincial government, with a further 3% of GGR carved out for First Nations support and responsible gambling initiatives.
Operators Live on Day One
Of the 50 registered brands, 22 platforms achieved go-live status at midnight on 13 July 2026. High-profile names immediately available to Albertans included:
- FanDuel Sportsbook and Casino
- DraftKings
- bet365 (Sportsbook and Casino)
- BetMGM
- Caesars Sportsbook and Casino
- BetRivers
- theScore Bet
- Golden Nugget Online Gaming
- DAZN Bet, BetVictor, TonyBet, PartyCasino, Sports Interaction
Supplier activity was equally fast. Pragmatic Play and Altenar confirmed Alberta integrations, and bet365 secured an official partnership with the Canadian Football League (CFL) as its sports betting and casino partner in Ontario and Alberta — timed ahead of the 113th Grey Cup in Calgary on 15 November 2026.
The October 13 Deadline
Operators that registered before 13 July 2026 but were not technically ready on day one have a three-month grace period. Under AGLC rules confirmed by Gowling WLG, all registered operators must have their Alberta-compliant platforms fully live by 13 October 2026, or exit the market. Failure to comply — or to secure a case-by-case extension — risks permanent ineligibility for future registration.
Unlicensed grey-market sites that did not apply for a licence by the 13 July 2026 registration deadline are now formally barred from serving Alberta residents. AGLC enforcement is expected to intensify following the October deadline, mirroring the posture Ontario's iGaming Ontario (iGO) adopted after its own 2022 launch.

What This Means for Bettors and Operators
For Albertans, the launch brings mandatory consumer protections the grey market never offered: centralized self-exclusion, deposit and time limits, player activity statements, and RG Check accreditation for all operators. Alberta also bans sign-up bonus advertising — a notable distinction from U.S. markets and Ontario — designed to curb the aggressive promotional campaigns that have drawn regulatory scrutiny elsewhere.
For the broader industry, Alberta is the largest new regulated iGaming market to open in North America since Ontario in 2022. Gambling Insider has reported that the launch is already pressuring other provinces — particularly British Columbia and Quebec — to evaluate their own licensing frameworks. If either follows, Canada's iGaming sector could add another C$2 billion+ in annual regulated GGR before the end of the decade.
The AiGC's stated mandate frames the launch not as a revenue grab but as a consumer protection exercise. How quickly the 87% channelization target is reached will determine whether other provinces view Alberta as a scalable model or a cautionary tale.
