Alberta iGaming Launch: 50 Operators Enter Canada's New Market
⏳ 3 min read

Alberta's regulated iGaming market opened on 13 July 2026, making the province the second jurisdiction in Canada — after Ontario — to allow private operators to offer licensed online casino and sports betting. 22 platforms went live on day one, with 50 operators holding full registration and more brands onboarding through an October deadline.

The launch follows Bill 48 — the iGaming Alberta Act, passed in spring 2025, which created the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) and empowered the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis regulator (AGLC) to license and oversee operators. Industry analysts at H2 Gambling Capital project the market will generate around C$850 million in gross gaming revenue in its first fiscal year ending March 2027.

The Launch

At midnight on 13 July 2026, Alberta became Canada's newest open iGaming market. The province spent roughly 18 months building its regulatory infrastructure after Bill 48 received Royal Assent. Regulatory amendments to the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Regulation were published in January 2026, and the AGLC began accepting operator applications immediately after — vetting applicants on financial standing, technical integrity, and responsible-gambling capability.

Operators that completed registration but had not launched by 13 July have until 13 October 2026 to go live or surrender their registration. That hard deadline prevents licence-hoarding and ensures the approved pool translates into genuine consumer choice for Alberta bettors.

Regulatory Framework

Alberta's model mirrors Ontario's two-body structure. The AGLC acts as independent regulator — registering operators, setting standards, auditing games, and running the province's centralised self-exclusion programme. The AiGC operates alongside it as a commercial entity, negotiating revenue-sharing agreements with each operator and promoting the regulated sector to consumers.

  • Operators pay a 20% gross gaming revenue (GGR) tax to the province.
  • The province projects approximately C$100 million in annual tax receipts once the market matures.
  • All licensed sites must link to the centralised AGLC self-exclusion database.
  • Suppliers — RNG providers, payment processors, platform vendors — require separate AGLC registration.

Alberta iGaming Launch: Operators on Day One

The opening roster included the largest names in North American sports betting and online casino. Government-run PlayAlberta remained live throughout, now competing directly against private brands for the first time. Notable day-one launches:

  • FanDuel Sportsbook & Casino
  • DraftKings Sportsbook & Casino (plus Golden Nugget Online Gaming)
  • bet365 Sportsbook & Casino
  • BetMGM — with MGM Rewards integration and a partnership with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid
  • Caesars Sportsbook & Casino
  • BetRivers, theScore Bet, PointsBet Canada, and BallyBet

DraftKings activated Alberta-specific promotions tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, timing its full launch to the tournament's North American hosting window. The remaining 28 registered-but-not-yet-live operators must complete commercial onboarding by 13 October 2026.

Alberta vs. Ontario: Market Comparison

Ontario's market, which opened to private operators in April 2022, generated more than C$4.4 billion in gross gaming revenue in the year ending 31 May 2026. Alberta's population of roughly 5 million is approximately 30% of Ontario's 16+ million, and analysts size the Alberta market at around 25–34% of Ontario's by GGR — smaller by headcount but structurally identical in model.

What Bettors Can Expect

Alberta residents now have access to a competitive, licensed marketplace with full consumer protections unavailable through offshore channels. Key practical points:

  • All licensed sites must display the AiGC trust mark and link to the AGLC self-exclusion programme.
  • Promotions must comply with AGLC advertising rules that prohibit targeting vulnerable individuals and restrict inducements to new customers only.
  • Deposit limits, reality checks, and cooling-off periods are mandatory operator-side features under the Alberta iGaming Strategy.
  • The 13 October 2026 commercial-onboarding deadline means the operator list will expand through Q3, growing game libraries and promotional competition for players.

For bettors who previously used unregulated offshore sites, switching to a licensed platform means funds are held under AGLC oversight and disputes can be escalated through a formal complaints process — a meaningful upgrade in consumer protection.
