Alberta iGaming Hits One Month: Beating Channelization Targets
⏱ 3 min read

Alberta's regulated iGaming market is one month old — and Canada's newest betting jurisdiction is already threatening to outrun its own targets. AiGC CEO Dan Keene told industry media in mid-August that the province's opening month had been "encouraging," with operator sign-ups and channelization figures both exceeding pre-launch expectations.

The province launched its competitive online casino and sports-betting market on July 13, 2026, becoming Canada's second regulated iGaming jurisdiction after Ontario's 2022 debut. The opening week alone generated 3.2 million geolocation checks recorded by compliance provider GeoComply — a direct proxy for player activity — with a spike of more than 53,000 checks around the FIFA World Cup final on July 19.

Launch Numbers at One Month

The market opened on July 13 with 22 live operator sites, including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars, bet365, BetRivers, and Betway. Roughly 50 entities had secured Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) registrations ahead of launch day, but operators must separately execute a commercial agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) before going live.

By mid-August, the live operator count had climbed to 28 sites, with new entrants including Videoslots, Mr Vegas, and Betsson's Casino Days brand, which re-entered Ontario simultaneously. BetMGM added live dealer casino games streamed from Las Vegas on August 20, and GGPoker secured AGLC registration on August 12, though it has yet to sign an AiGC commercial agreement and go live.

Channelization: On Track to Beat 70% Target

Alberta's core regulatory goal is channelization — shifting bettors from unregulated offshore sites onto licensed platforms. Before the market opened, provincial estimates put 70% of Alberta's online gambling activity on grey-market operators, with only 30% flowing through the government-run PlayAlberta platform. The AiGC set a target of 70% channelization after year one and 75% by the end of year two.

Keene now says early data suggests the province will "overachieve" that benchmark, though he has not released specific channelization figures. For context, Ontario reached approximately 83.7% channelization four years into its market — Alberta's regulators are using Ontario's trajectory as their primary benchmark.

Operator Pipeline Keeps Growing

Beyond the headline operator count, several developments in August signal a deepening market:

  • GGPoker obtained AGLC registration on August 12, marking the first major online poker network to enter the Alberta pipeline. Online poker was notably absent on launch day due to liquidity challenges unique to poker networks.
  • BetMGM launched live dealer tables streamed from MGM Resorts International properties on August 20, powered by Playtech — the first Las Vegas-based live studio feed available in an Alberta-regulated environment.
  • Alberta announced a portion of iGaming proceeds will fund new addiction treatment options, with 1% of gross gaming revenue earmarked for social responsibility and player safety initiatives.
  • Pragmatic Play slots became available across Alberta and Ontario operators via the St8 Platform, expanding the content catalogue within weeks of launch.

What Comes Next

The AGLC is running a three-month grace period, ending in October 2026, during which operators can complete their transition from grey-market activity to the regulated framework. After that window closes, enforcement pressure on unlicensed sites is expected to intensify. H2 Gambling Capital projects Alberta's iGaming GGR will reach C$1.2 billion in the current financial year and C$1.64 billion by FY28 — figures that would make Alberta a meaningful contributor to Canada's iGaming economy well ahead of schedule.

Online poker remains the market's most visible gap. GGPoker's AGLC registration is a necessary first step, but shared liquidity agreements — pooling Alberta player traffic with other regulated jurisdictions — are still unresolved, and remain the single biggest hurdle to a viable poker product in the province.
