Gambling Shirt Ban Drives Betway's Record £20m Man Utd Deal

The Premier League gambling shirt ban has been reshaping operator budgets for months. Now it has produced a landmark deal: Betway, the sportsbook owned by Super Group (NYSE: SGHC), has reportedly agreed a multi-year training kit sponsorship with Manchester United worth approximately £20 million ($26.8 million) per year — the most valuable training-kit-only deal in football history, according to reports first published by the Daily Mail on 27 May 2026 and subsequently confirmed by multiple outlets.

The agreement is a direct structural response to the Premier League's voluntary ban on front-of-shirt gambling sponsorship, which takes effect this coming August 2026. That ban strips an estimated £80 million ($107.5 million) from Premier League club revenues annually. With betting brands legally blocked from the most valuable piece of real estate in football, Betway and Manchester United may have just written the new operator playbook.

The Deal in Detail

First reported by Daily Mail football correspondent Mike Keegan on 27 May 2026 and subsequently corroborated by The Athletic, Fox Sports, and Goal.com, the agreement will put Betway's logo across all training wear at United's Carrington base, in official club media, and during press conferences and behind-the-scenes content. Reports put the annual value at approximately £20 million, a figure industry observers describe as the highest ever paid for a training-kit-only arrangement in world football.

The deal runs for several years and fills a gap that had been open since June 2025, when blockchain firm Tezos — which had paid £24 million per year — allowed its contract to expire. Neither Manchester United nor Betway had issued an official statement at the time of publication; all figures remain sourced from media reporting.

The Premier League Gambling Shirt Ban

Premier League clubs collectively agreed in April 2023, following consultation with the UK government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport, to remove gambling brands from the front of matchday shirts beginning with the 2026/27 season. The voluntary arrangement was intended to curb the visibility of betting promotions in sport, with eleven of the 20 top-flight clubs displaying gambling logos on their shirts throughout 2025/26.

The commercial damage is substantial. Research reported by The Guardian in April 2026 found as many as nine clubs had yet to finalise replacement front-of-shirt sponsors, with 12 clubs unsigned in total. Where new deals have been struck, sponsorship values have fallen to roughly half the levels previously associated with gambling partnerships. Betting companies remain free to sponsor shirt sleeves, training wear, stadium hoardings, and official partner agreements — channels now attracting significantly higher investment.

Betway's Premier League Portfolio

The Man Utd arrangement adds the club's estimated 1.1 billion global fans and followers to an already substantial Betway presence in English football. The operator held a front-of-shirt deal at West Ham United from 2015/16 through 2024/25 and is the 'Official Global Betting Partner' of Manchester City under a multi-year agreement announced in July 2024. More recent — and smaller — commercial partnerships with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Brighton & Hove Albion round out a portfolio now spanning five of the Premier League's largest clubs.

Globally, the Super Group brand also maintains sponsorship deals in La Liga and the NBA. The training kit deal at Carrington is the largest single investment in that portfolio to date.

A New Sponsorship Playbook for Operators

The Betway move is expected to accelerate a broader reallocation of gambling marketing budgets. Industry analysts at SBC News described the deal as "a game-changing alternative as operators look towards some form of affiliation" with Premier League clubs under the new rules. Sleeve sponsorships and enhanced regional betting-partner agreements are already emerging as the next battleground. What was once considered a secondary channel is now the primary visibility play for any betting brand seeking sustained Premier League exposure.

Sponsorship Type Status from Aug 2026 Est. Annual Value Notes
Front-of-shirt match kit Banned £5m–£10m (↓ ~50%) Only for non-gambling brands; many clubs still unsigned
Training kit Permitted Up to £20m+ Betway / Man Utd sets new record benchmark
Shirt sleeve Permitted £2m–£8m Available to gambling operators; demand rising
Stadium LED / perimeter Permitted Variable Broadcast-visible; premium for top-six clubs
Official regional betting partner Permitted £2m–£15m Unlocks digital, social & broadcast rights

Manchester United's Commercial Comeback

The Betway deal lands during a tangible financial recovery at Old Trafford. For the nine months to March 2026, the club reported an operating profit of £37.7 million ($50.5 million) — compared to a £3.2 million operating loss in the same period a year earlier. Full-year revenue guidance was raised to between £655 million and £665 million, with EBITDA projected above £200 million.

Champions League qualification — the club's return to Europe's top competition — is expected to contribute approximately £80 million in additional revenue. Manager Michael Carrick, confirmed in the role permanently, is reported to have a transfer budget of around £150 million available this summer. The training kit agreement with Betway is a meaningful piece of the commercial architecture supporting that recovery.
